Fenway Clayworks is looking for an experienced and motivated Production Potter to join our team. Wheel throwing is the primary focus of this full-time, hands on position. The Production Potter will make pottery to established forms, dimensions, and quality standards, while also contributing to the complete ceramic production process, from preparing clay and trimming work to glazing, kiln loading, and firing.

The ideal candidate is a confident, efficient potter who enjoys the rhythm of production work, takes pride in craftsmanship, and understands the balance between speed, consistency, and quality. This person is comfortable working independently, communicating with a small team, and helping wherever needed to keep studio production moving.

Responsibilities

Production throwing — primary responsibility

• Throw a variety of pottery forms to established shapes, weights, and dimensions.
• Consistently reproduce forms across production batches.
• Manage the pots dryness throughout the production process
• Work efficiently while maintaining quality and attention to detail.
• Meet agreed upon daily and weekly production goals.
• Learn and maintain Fenway Clayworks’ forms, proportions, and production standards.

Trimming and finishing

• Trim and refine leather hard work; Trim pots, add handles, and other details to studio standards.
• Prepare work for drying, glazing, and firing.
• Inspect work throughout production and identify pieces that do not meet quality standards.

Glazing and surface finishing

• Prepare, mix, test, and apply glazes according to studio recipes and procedures.
• Maintain consistency in glaze coverage, color, texture, and finish.
• Care for glaze materials, tools, and equipment; assist with glaze testing and development as needed.

Kiln loading and firing

• Load and unload studio kilns using appropriate techniques and spacing.
• Follow established firing schedules, procedures, and safety practices.
• Monitor firings, communicate issues, and inspect finished work.

General studio operations

• Prepare and reclaim clay; maintain a clean, organized, and functional workspace.
• Care for pottery tools, equipment, kilns, and shared studio spaces.
• Communicate production progress and challenges with the team.
• Contribute to other studio production tasks as needed.

Qualifications

• Strong wheel throwing skills and experience producing functional pottery.
• Ability to consistently throw forms to specific dimensions and weights.
• Efficient studio practices and comfort working in a repetitive production environment.
• Understanding of clay behavior and the stages of ceramic production.
• Experience with trimming, glazing, and surface finishing.
• Familiarity with kiln loading, firing procedures, and kiln safety.
• Attention to detail, reliability, organization, and good time management.
• Ability to work independently while contributing positively to a small team.

Professional production pottery experience is preferred. Experience with electric kiln firing is preferred; familiarity with gas, wood, or soda firing is a plus.

We’re looking for a dependable, detail-oriented Operations Assistant to help finish our products, fulfill orders, and keep the studio running smoothly.

You’ll assemble lamps, prepare pottery for its final use, carefully pack orders, and maintain our shared workspace. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys practical work, stays organized, and takes pride in getting the details right. Your work will help ensure that every piece leaves our studio finished with care and ready for its new home.

Responsibilities

• Pack and ship customer and wholesale orders, checking items for accuracy and quality.
• Assemble lamps and lighting components following established procedures and quality checks.
• Sand and finish fired pottery to create smooth, clean surfaces.
• Clean and maintain kiln shelves and kiln furniture.
• Organize finished inventory, shipping materials, tools, and supplies.
• Help receive deliveries and move products and materials throughout the studio.
• Follow studio cleaning routines and safety procedures.
• Assist with other finishing, fulfillment, and studio support tasks as priorities change.

Qualifications

• A reliable, organized person who follows through and notices details.
• Comfort using hand tools and learning assembly and finishing processes.
• Patience and care when handling fragile products or completing repetitive tasks.
• The ability to follow instructions, work independently, and communicate with a small team.
• Willingness to switch between tasks and help where needed.

Experience in shipping, assembly, woodworking, fabrication, or a studio environment is helpful, but not required. We’re happy to train someone who brings care, curiosity, and a strong work ethic. No pottery experience is necessary.

Working in the studio

This is an active position involving standing, repetitive hand work, bending, reaching, and moving boxes and materials. Safe practices and appropriate protective equipment are part of the job, especially when sanding pottery and maintaining kiln shelves.
